God Damn It. Stop Killing Each Other
Freep - Just hours after Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans announced a 25% dip in homicides, he was called to a home with two dead bodies on the lawn. A third man, also involved in the Monday night shooting, was pronounced dead at Sinai-Grace Hospital, and a fourth was being treated for injuries. By midday today, two more bodies in unrelated incidents were discovered — one, a 17-year-old killed about 10 a.m. near his burned-out vehicle, and the other, an unidentified body found burning in the trunk of a car near the Packard Plant. “Let the carnage stop,” Evans said this morning. In the first incident, four men were shot outside a home near the corner of Cathedral and Rosemont on the city’s northwest side about 10:30 p.m. Monday. Two of the victims were identified as Jamar Porter, 22, and Laron McCline, 35; both were shot in the head. The third victim’s name has not been released pending family notification. He was shot in the chest, officials said.
As completely over the top as we are here at Joeyblueskies.com it is becoming increasingly hard to sit back and comment sarcastically on the continued demise of our once great city. I still hold out more hope for Detroit than most people and it is my dream to someday live in a thriving downtown area where people are free from the devastation that has crippled the city for several decades. But with each passing month where more and more stories of corruption, homicide, and despair come pouring out, a little bit of me dies with it.
I want to be part of the solution. I want to be part of the rebirth of the Paris of the midwest. I want to believe that the work ethic and determination of a proud people will not die along with the the countless people murdered over the past 50 years. To me it is not a simple solution. But is one that can be reached with proper leadership, faith, and an undying resolve for something better. Give me an education system without hypocrisy. Give me a police system without prejudice. Give me a greener economy rooted in solar, nuclear, and cleaner coal technology that will create jobs that will improve our future and not add to the problem. Give me a public transportation system that will connect the suburbs with the inner city. And give me help, not indifference for a situation that cannot go ignored any longer.
As was mentioned in Requiem For Detroit, the city has become a slow motion Katrina. Take a look at the lower 9th ward and tell me it isn't a mirror image of Woodward Avenue just outside of Comerica Park. The people of Detroit are strong, I just hope the people in charge are stronger and have the same resolve that I have. Get on it people and fast. Cause with each murder it is becoming increasingly harder for me to convince the Lady Friend that Detroit will return. For the sake of the people there, I just hope that I'm right.
