Casey Fitzsimmons Gets Emotional - Good Night Sweet Prince

Casey Fitzsimmons still feels like he can play. He still wants to play. After seven years of hard times with the Detroit Lions, he would love to be part of some good times. He just can’t. “I think the worst part about this whole deal is that I can’t see the ship right -- for the Ford family, for the people of Detroit, for every Lions fan across America,” the former tight end said today over the phone from his home in Montana. “I can’t be a part of this turnaround that I think is right around the corner. “I think that’s what hurts the most having to make this decision, knowing damn well that my body -- legs, arms, everything -- can still play at a high level. It’s just one hit to the head, and it could be a whole different ballgame.” Fitzsimmons announced his retirement Wednesday after suffering a series of concussions during his NFL career.

Man, I haven't been this emotional about a football player since I watched "Rise & Walk - The Dennis Byrd Story". But poor Casey Fitzsimmons being forced to hang it up because of concussions is heart breaking. Never mind that he probably wouldn't have played a snap this season cause we used a first round pick on Brandon Pettigrew last year, but hey at least the guy is optimistic about the Lions' future. I just don't know if that is a good sign or a bad sign. Either way, this should free him up to go back to Montana and coach some 8 on 8 football that he grew up playing.
