Updates: MSU Keeps Old Logo & Manny Harris' Return In Question
After weeks of spirited discussion about the possibility of a logo change for Michigan State, athletics director Mark Hollis said today that the athletics department will continue to use the current Spartan head logo in its soon-to-be-released branding initiative. “After careful consideration, we will use the current Spartan logo design, first used in the late 1970s, to build our visual brand identity,” Hollis said in a news release. Last month, fans found evidence of an updated Spartan head logo as it went through trademark registration, which created a significant outcry from the public. Basketball coach Tom Izzo then spent a portion of his weekly news conference defending the Nike-sponsored branding program and Hollis, while criticizing those who opposed the change.
So I guess the braintrust over in East Lansing heard the public outcry from all the joeyballgamers about their potential logo change and caved under the immense pressure stirred up by our first ever poll question. In our poll, Old Sparty took down the top spot with a whopping 44% of the popular vote compared to 22% that the new "300" Sparty received. It is note worthy that the classic Spartan block "S" also beat out the new logo with 33% of the vote. Even with the backing of Tom Izzo, the new Spartan logo never stood a chance. Christ, Izzo has fallen so far he can't even win a logo dispute these days. But hey, the ballgamers have spoken.
In other news...
Michigan basketball coach John Beilein tried to soften star guard Manny Harris’ comments Tuesday that he planned to return for his senior season. Harris indicated he was confident he would forgo the NBA draft in a session with reporters after Tuesday's loss at Northwestern. But Beilein today cautioned that it's not a done deal for the junior. “I wouldn’t say, right now, he was ready to talk about that,” Beilein said. “He was talking more about the big picture and not from a personal decision about what people have to do. I wouldn’t say he was ready to make a statement. You shouldn’t be thinking about those things right now -- and he isn’t.”
Pretty sure I called this in my Northwestern/UofM post-game report from the other day. Shit is too easy sometimes.
