Get Out Your Multicolored Wool Sweaters Cause Lions Pre-Draft Coverage Begins Now - Part 1
As we prepare to dive deep inside the mind of The Schwartz and Martin Mayhew over the next few months I've made the executive decision to bring my boy Mallard into the mix to help with the weight of Detroit Lions draft coverage. His writing style is fluid and his Lions credentials are impeccable. I can attest to this cause I was sitting with him at Ford Field as Millen took Charles Rogers with the #2 overall pick (crowd went fuckin wild, by the way) and I was destroying Molson Ice with him at his dad's house the following year as we thought Millen got things right with Roy, KJ and Teddy. So sit back, relax and enjoy part 1 of Lions NFL draft coverage. Only 75 days until the Detroit Lions Draft Day Extravaganza in Brooklyn. Get here.

A wise man once said “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Now this wise man is certainly unaware of the workings of legendary Pennsylvania State University All-American Matthew George Millen. Not only did Matthew George Millen debunk this logic, he also single handily invented a systematic approach to ruin any professional sports franchise, and yes, I am talking about the magical Millen draft years.
Christmas may be behind us but for the Detroit Lion faithful, the real presents rest under the joyful NFL draft day weekend tree. It is that time of the year for optimism. You can already hear it, Lions fans everywhere saying “would you rather have Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy”….Well I say, who gives a fuck; rather let’s spend a little time and revisit how we Lions fans got to this point……
The glorious Millen draft years analysis and recap:
2001: The Golden Year
First Round: Jeff Backus, T, Michigan
Second Round: Dominic Raiola, C, Nebraska
Second Round: Shaun Rogers, DT, Texas
Fifth Round: Scotty Anderson, WR, Grambling
Fifth Round: Mike McMahon, QB, Rutgers
Sixth Round: Jason Glenn, LB, Texas A&M
Analysis: Clearly Bmase’s favorite two Lions are in this draft, McMahon and Anderson…This draft was Millen’s highlight…..Backus & Raiola are serviceable, Rogers is a fucking stud……..enough said
2002: Joey Queer Years Begin
First Round: Joey Harrington, QB, Oregon
Second Round: Kalimba Edwards, DE, South Carolina
Third Round: Andre Goodman, CB, South Carolina
Fourth Round: John Taylor, DE, Montana State
Fifth Round: John Owens, TE, Notre Dame
Sixth Round: Chris Cash, CB, USC
Seventh Round: Luke Staley, RB, BYU
Seventh Round: Matt Murphy, TE, Maryland
Seventh Round: Victor Rogers, OL, Colorado
Analysis: Arguably Millen’s worst draft. I know that is a bold fucking statement but look at the facts. Every player from this draft is a complete piece of shit. I mean who the hell is John Taylor in the 4th round? John Owens? Give me a fucking break…..At least Luke Stanley was pretty sweet until that tragic injury…
2003: The Receivers Start to Flock
First Round: Charles Rogers, WR, Michigan State
Second Round: Boss Bailey, LB, Georgia
Third Round: Cory Redding, DT, Texas
Fourth Round: Artose Pinner, RB, Kentucky
Fifth Round: Terrence Holt, S, North Carolina State
Fifth Round: James Davis, LB, West Virginia
Sixth Round: David Kircus, WR, Grand Valley State
Seventh Round: Ben Johnson, OL, Wisconsin
Seventh Round: Blue Adams, CB, Cincinnati
Seventh Round: Brandon Drumm, FB, Colorado
Seventh Round: Travis Anglin, WR, Memphis
Analysis: Cory Redding might be hated here in Detroit but at least he is still getting paid…As for Boss ‘watermelon picking” Bailey, he was a complete waste of a pick and should have never been taken that high (remember how he was a projected top 15 pick and just dropped like hell on draft day?)..I always wondered, if Millen loved WRs sooo fucking much, why did he pass on Andre Johnson and take Charles Rogers? Classic Millen blunder…. David Kircus is just laughable
2004: Receivers Continue to Flock
First Round: Roy Williams, WR, Texas
First Round: Kevin Jones, RB, Virginia Tech
Second Round: Teddy Lehman, LB, Oklahoma
Third Round: Keith Smith, CB, McNeese State
Fifth Round: Alex Lewis, LB, Wisconsin
Sixth Round: Kelly Butler, T, Purdue
Analysis: Let the record show, I absolutely loved the first three picks of this draft (back in 2004 of course)…but damn was I wrong! Thank god Roy Williams is fucking gone from Detroit….Kevin Jones might have had a future if it wasn’t for injuries and same goes for Lehman….A very small draft compared to the previous years but still had a common one thing………..a complete waste of a draft.
