Gunther Unleashes The Fury On Bart Scott
Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham had some strong words in response to accusations New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott made about the Lions being a dirty team after Sunday’s game.
“So I don’t want this one-track pony going, ‘Oh, the Lions are dirty,’“ Cunningham said after the Lions’ practice today. “We hit you. And I told you that in the beginning of the year, or last year, we’re going to hit you. And we’re not going to push you out on the sideline. We’re going to hit you. You’re legal, we’re going to hit you.
“That’s what we do, and for them to call us a dirty football team really (ticks) me off. We play tough, we play hard, and we’re going to continue to do that, and we’re going to get better at that. And mister what’s his name? Scott? Maybe he can read that if you write it.”
Cunningham also took exception to the Jets’ style of play. Cunningham recalled a play in the first half in which safety Louis Delmas made a tackle near the Jets’ sideline and then was hit by Jets defensive back James Ihedigbo, who was on the bench. “And one of their players came off the bench and hit Delmas,” Cunningham said. “I’d like to tell you what I’d like to do to that guy if I ever saw him. There was no call on that play. The official was shielded.”
In Sunday’s 23-20 overtime loss, the Lions were penalized for three chop-block penalties, which prompted criticism from Scott, a Detroit Southeastern alumnus. “They’re a good football team but, by far, the dirtiest football team I’ve ever played against since I played the Tennessee Titans,” Scott said. “They are the dirtiest team I’ve played against.”
Lions coach Jim Schwartz responded to Scott’s comments Monday by saying, “You probably have to consider the source.” On Wednesday, Scott shot back by at Schwartz by saying, “Listen, I won’t have to play Detroit for another four years, I could care less what that man has to say. … Am I going to see (him at) the Super Bowl? Playoffs? Probably not. In the parking lot? What do you want me to say? Why would I care? I never have to see him again. Ever.”
This little war of words keeps getting better and better. At first it was just a lot of shit talking on the field, and then a few snide comments between Scott and Schwartz afterwards. But now Gunther is jumping in the ring and isn't pulling any punches. Shit, he even busted out the big guns and called Scott a "one track pony", whatever the fuck that is. All I know is them be fighting words in my book.
