Nick Lidstrom Back For Another Year

Detroit -- Red Wings captain Nick Lidstrom will return for the 2010-11 season, much to the great relief of the entire organization. Wings officials will announce later today Lidstrom has agreed to a one-year deal. The exact amount was unknown, but it is believed to be near $6 million. Lidstrom, at 40, remains one of the elite defensemen in the NHL. He played in all 82 games last season and was a plus-22.

Wings make the absolutely necessary move of bringing back Nick Lidstrom for another year at an estimated 6 million dollars. It would've been nice if Nick gave us a hometown discount allowing us to sign more young talent and take one last run at the cup before he rides off into the sunset, but you can't really blame him for doing what is in his best interest. And you also can't blame the Wings for bringing him back at what might be considered a high price tag for an aging defenseman. Cause we need him. If the Wings stay relatively healthy and are in a position to make another run come trade deadline next year you bring in a veteran defenseman, ala Jamie Macoun, to tighten up in our own zone and help Nick with some of the load. Then all that's left is the white gloves and champagne.

PS - Note to Ken Holland...Once Nick does decide to go the defense is looking at a major overhaul. You keep Rafalski and Kronwall, build up this year's draft pick Brendan Smith and after that give me proven playoff guys. No more of the Lebdas and Liljas of the world. Gotta get younger, more physical, and smarter.
