Lions Accused of Tampering With Kansas City Player
FoxSports.com reported today that the Chiefs filed tampering charges against the Lions, an accusation that, if proved, could result in a fine and loss of draft picks. A person familiar with the allegation said it centers on Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham and Chiefs cornerback Jarrad Page, though the particulars of the charge are unclear.
Cunningham was Kansas City’s defensive coordinator in 2004-08. Page, a seventh-round draft pick in 2006, started every game his final two seasons under Cunningham. In February, the Free Press reported that the Lions might be interested in signing some of Cunningham’s former players. Page was set to be a restricted free agent at the time. “They keep wanting to dump players,” Cunningham said then. “I would like to be there to catch a lot of them, because I know a couple of those guys.”
The Chiefs made Page a one-year tender offer to keep his rights, but Page, angry at how the team handled his injury situation in 2009, refused to sign until shortly before the season. He was traded the next day to the New England Patriots.
Can someone tell me why the Lions are even in this story? Page got pissed at the Chiefs cause they didn't handle his injury and contract renewal the way he had hoped so he talked shit and got "Randy Moss'd" outta town after they resigned him. So what the hell does Gunther saying he wants to catch some of the players the Chiefs dump have to do with anything? The guy resigned and ended up getting traded to NE. Had he signed with Detroit or been traded there then I can maybe see filing a complaint but that's not what happened. If the Lions lose a draft pick over this, even a late round one, I swear I'm fuckin turning into one of these Lion conspiracy theorists.
