Put Your Dre Bly Jersey On Ebay Again Cause The Lions Cut Him & Traded for Alphonso Smith. Wait, What?
Everyone knew the Lions were gonna cut some of the fat in the secondary in order to get the roster down to 53, but I didn't see recently reacquired Dre Bly being one of those sent packing. I just don't understand cutting a guy who is a proven NFL player from a secondary that has major holes everywhere. He's definitely lost a step or two but still has the instincts to play the position, and besides Delmas he's the only guy in the Lion's secondary whose made a play in the last 10 years. I think he would've been good to have around in case either Jonathan Wade or Chris Houston go down with an injury but that's just me.
In the wake of this move, they acquired former 2009 2nd round pick Alphonso Smith from the Broncos to help with some of the work load. I don't have many details as to why he fell out of favor so quickly in Denver, but most say it was his inconsistency that got him a pink slip. I just hope his raw physical tools can help our thin secondary and that Delmas' work ethic rubs off on him. Even though it seems like we just got rid of one guy that nobody wanted and replaced him with another, I personally think Alphonso could turn out to be a solid pick up by Mayhew that helps the Lions for awhile.
