Week 1 - Lions @ Bears: Game Notes

With all the hoopla and what have you that surrounded the Lions game on Sunday I haven't had time to give you my game notes. Here's what's up with the Lions after week 1.

1. Louis Delmas is the best defensive player the Lions have had since Chris Spielman. Guy is like Predator out there, making plays on balls in the air, stepping up and makes tackles faster than our linebackers, and constantly makes wideouts shit themselves anytime they come across the middle. Not to mention his grill is showtime as shit and that groin injury isn't slowing him down any. In another year he'll be on par with Bob Sanders.

2. The defensive front is definitely for real. As much as we all thought they'd be good, it's great to see them making plays when things mattered. Sure they gave up a lot of yards against a pretty lackluster offense, but don't forget 87 or so of those came on one blown assignment. Bottom line they looked hungry out there. Just think about the last time you saw a Lions defense have two goal line stands, one preserving a 1 pt lead late in the fourth quarter after a turnover on our own goal line. When Follett filled the hole on that fourth and goal and stopped Forte short of the goal line I almost threw my shoulder outta the socket with how hard I was fist pumping. It was the first time in a long time that I felt like a real football fan. And most of the credit for the improved front should go to Vanden Boesch. The dude never turns it off and caught at least 4 guys from behind in that game. Watching him play is inspiring.

3. The injury bug is biting hard again. It seems like no matter who's in charge or which direction we're trying to go, we are constantly derailed by injuries. It can't be the conditioning cause we've had 50 different coaches in the last 10 years. And it can't be karma cause with all the wins we've supplied other teams over the last 10 years we've put more coins into that piggy bank than any other team in the league. No, it must be that we're straight cursed. I've got no other explanation. If any other key pieces go out we're looking at chalking this whole year up as a loss. So far the key injuries include Stafford, DeAndre Levy, Cliff Avril, and now rookie Aaron Berry whose out for the year with an injured shoulder. And before I get a bunch of hate mail, I know Aaron Berry isn't a huge contributor but he did come down with that interception on Sunday. Might even see our third round pick Amari Spievey out there a little more. Imagine that, an early third rounder starting. NFW.

4. Shaun Hill to the rescue!? Seriously, what the hell are we gonna get outta Shaun Hill? They brought him here cause he's proven that he can play and has experience winning games, but that was with a killer running game in Frank Gore. The Lions definitely don't have anything close to that. See Jahvid Best's stat line. He better get used to taking some shots too, cause this offensive line is still getting torched on a regular basis. How did Lance Briggs get in the backfield like that?

5. And now let's talk about our head of secret service, Jeff Backus. All I gotta say is that he's real lucky the game ended with this whole controversial call bullshit cause if it didn't his absolute undressing at the hands of Julius Peppers would be all anyone was talking about.
