Right-handed reliever Joel Zumaya has agreed to a one-year contract and will avoid arbitration, the Detroit Tigers announced this morning. Zumaya was having his best season since his breakout rookie year when he suffered a non-displaced fracture of the olecranon June 29. (That’s, basically, the tip of the elbow.) At the time, he had appeared in 31 games with a 2-1 record, 2.58 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings.
Zumaya has been decent when he's not preoccupied throwing passed balls or walking people and depending on the money involved this is probably a low risk, high reward investment. Guy can be dominant when he's confident and if he sucks or gets hurt again you cut him instantly.
