Michigan Hires Greg Mattison as D-Coordinator

Freep - Mattison, announced today by U-M coach Brady Hoke as the Wolverines’ new defensive coordinator, could be viewed as a savior, trying to fix the worst defense in Michigan history.

I'm gonna be honest here and let you know that I couldn't tell you the difference between Greg Mattison and Greg Robinson the day they were hired as UofM D-coordinators, with the exception that Robinson was coming off a 10-37 record as Syracuse head coach. Regardless of Robinson's failure as the main man at Syracuse, I still had faith in his ability as a defensive guru because of his success running the two time Super Bowl championship Denver Broncos defense. As time has painfully told, Robinson just didn't have what it took to motivate, and educate young football minds. I have much higher hopes for Mattison who has had major success on both the collegiate and professional level as a defensive coordinator. He won a national championship along side Urban Meyer in Florida and has schemed for one of the best defenses in the NFL since 2008. You also gotta consider the fact that Brady Hoke and Mattison are good friends who have worked together previously at Michigan. They both understand the expectations that come with the job and the way the job is done. Here is what former ND coach had to say about his former D-coordinator Mattison...

Michigan and Brady Hoke hit a home run hiring Greg Mattison. He’s, without a doubt, one of the best people, one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around. The first thing, Greg Mattison is a great, great recruiter. Michigan certainly needs that right now. Second thing, he develops players as well as any coach I’ve been around. Third, you look at the experiences he’s had, he was at Florida with Urban Meyer when they won the national championship. He’s been with the Baltimore Ravens. Michigan and Brady Hoke could not have hired a better guy for that job than Greg Mattison.”

Well shit, I think I'm sold on our defense getting gradually better over time under Mattison. I also think the ceiling is incredibly high if he doesn't become jaded with the initial struggles. More to come on the particular scheme we'll be running but Mattison has shown his ability to adapt to the talent at hand which will be essential in the rebuilding process of one the nation's worst defenses on the nation's most winningest program
