Saturday Night Lights

Freep - Michigan athletic director, Dave Brandon and football coach Rich Rodriguez announced plans today for U-M to host the first night game in school history against Notre Dame. The game will begin at 8 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2011, and will be televised nationally on either ESPN or ESPN2. “If all goes well, we’d love to at least have one game a year scheduled at night at Michigan Stadium,” Brandon said. “It’d be a terrific tradition to start. Logistically, we’ll figure it out, and we’ll execute it at the same high level that we try to every game.”

“Saturday night prime-time college football is probably as popular as anything that’s out there on television,” Rodriguez said. “So it should be a great thing for our program, should be a great thing for the University of Michigan.”

After years of bright and sunny noon kickoffs, The Big House will play host to its first ever night game under the lights. It's about time Michigan catches up to the rest of college football in this regard and moved into Saturday night prime time. People don't need to go crazy and start suggesting that we play Thursday night games against the MAC but all in all this will be a good thing for Michigan. I know if I was still in college I would love this cause it means once a year I don't have to wake up at 8 after staying out till 4 the night before in order to drink myself stupid before a noon kickoff. Now I can get blackout on Friday night, sleep till 12, beer die until 7 and then head to the Big House. Sounds pretty fuckin good to me. I just worry about the fact that this could get real ugly quick. If Michigan blows again this year and Notre Dame gets nice under Brian Kelly then we could be looking at a national TV asswhooping at home. But if it gets too tough to watch at least we can always turn off the lights.

PS - Pretty ballsy of Rich Rod to comment on this like he is gonna be around in 2011. I mean I hope he is cause these high profile night games are the exact type of environment that he thrived in at West Virginia. And if Michigan got rolling I can't tell you how electric the environment would be at the Big House.
